Our Biography

"Spangly Lo-Fi innocence like it was made out of egg boxes and yoghurt pots and glued together with alt. rock PVA comes from Shana Tova. Harmonic splendour and pulses of drumming genius ensure many will be bowled over by the Tova” Fly Magazine Nov/Dec 08.

You’re going to think there must be more than three people in this band. Shana Tova drummer, Alan, would appear to have ten very creative arms, whilst Geordie’s guitar whips around Leanne’s bass in his instantly recognizable style; long spidery riffs in the vein of Graham Coxon at his most inventive. Meanwhile all three provide a wall of complementary vocals. Despite an egalitarian approach their sound is focused and distinct - something frighteningly rare these days. Shana Tova, like all the very best indie bands, are eccentric, literate, self-effacing and just a little bit odd.

Shana Tova have gathered strength and momentum, plying their angular and furious live show on the alternative stages of art and music. Whether playing for their dedicated fans alongside the likes of Tubelord, Johnny Foreigner and Sunset Cinema Club to name a few, or winning over the hearts of hardened art audiences at what can only be described as extraordinary art and music events, Shana Tova seem to fit seamlessly into any given scenario. Perhaps it is this that gives them the edge in a music industry saturated with disco-indie and singer-songwriter pop. A live energy and DIY ethic has seen Shana Tova audiences ever multiply nationally; it’s only a matter of time until the international fans are dancing along to Shana Tova’s distinctive indie tuneage.

Their sound is fired by an admiration of the erudite and passionate Scottish indie greats; Orange Juice, Delgados, Belle & Sebastian, and the incendiary rasp of U.S. Alternative Rock: Fugazi, Sugar, Thingy and Violent Femmes. The band extend this musical legacy to a largely untapped art audience, by performing alongside Performance Artists, VJs and Poets.

“Catchier than a Velcro virus and more hooks than a Peter Pan convention”

The band emphasize their agenda as “every song has to be a bullseye”. Shana Tova are accustomed to critical acclaim and a fanatical following from indie record collectors, from their roles in previous bands: Geordie co-fronted The Starries, described by Simon Williams of Fierce Panda as “Idlewild falling down a flight of stairs, falling off a mountain” and "the Lennon & McCartney of Lo-Fi" by Alan Farmer of Bearos Records. Leanne courted the national music press in all girl media magnet Twist, and Alan performed alongside Alexei from Johnny Foreigner in Panda Love Unit. All three had a string of successful releases on Fierce Panda, Bearos and Awkward Records.

Shana Tova’s debut EP hits all digital music outlets on 4th May 2009 and is available for pre-order via 7digital.com right now. A second Shana Tova release is due late Summer, again through Viann&Violet, sharing a split EP with Little Dipper who were recently interviewed on Steve Lamacq’s BBC6 Music show.
